Current Situation:
A few years ago, you decided that the thing you like best about your work, is the large amount of traveling you get to do. You decide to go on a world tour, but the thought of taking part in any organized tour disgusts you. You want to see the world on your terms, your own way. You have a friend named Byron Sardonovich agrees to accompany you on your adventure. The two of you travel as light as possible, carrying only what you need in small knapsacks. You hitch rides whereever possible, and sleep outside more often than not. Over the months, the two of you have grown very close, and have even been lovers. You haven’t so much been traversing the globe, as meandering around it. Since entering the United States, you’ve traveled from NewBosWash to Nashville to Chiwaukee to New Orleans, seeing the sights as you went.
After Byron’s (presumed) death, you withdrew into yourself. You would sit around the homeless shelter for hours, staring into space or crying. You are now convinced that New Orleans is an evil place. This city positively reaks of evil. You can feel it like a presence in the back of your brain, threatening to drag you under. This oppressive feeling is taking its toll on you. You can’t seem to motivate yourself to leave. It just feels too hopeless to go on. You sit, holding your knapsack in front of you like a shield, hoping that somehow, the light nylon material will protect you. There are some foreigners questioning the She sits and listens to the strangers. Their accents seem strange…even to her, a foreigner in this land. They are asking about people disappearing. She thinks of Byron’s face, illuminated by the glow of the orange sodium-vapor light overhead. She thinks of the fear in his eyes, of the tentacle wrapped around his face, blocking his mouth so he couldn’t even cry out. She remembers emptying her pistol, trying to shoot him free, and then fleeing when the probing tentacles came toward her. She looks down at the polaroid snapshot of the two of them at Graceland. The tears begin again, falling onto Byron’s face, causing the surface of the photo to bubble up. She hears a throat clear and looks up into the face of one of the strangers. He is looking at her as if he can feel her sorrow. He offers her his hand.
