This is Free Trader Beowulf…
                           Mayday…

These words adorned the box of the first (some would say the only) real science fiction role-playing game. I was introduced to Traveller in the fall of 1980. I was a sophomore in high school and was riding the activity bus home after school. A small group of us rolled up quick characters, and played a short scenario. And although my character had died by the end of the session, I was amazed at the feeling of loss that accompanied his demise. I was hooked. I bought the boxed set the next week, and began devising my own scenarios. A small group of friends got involved. Then new people I met in college. Then people beyond college. And, although the face of the game has changed many times, my devotion to it has never died.
